Psalm 91

A SECRET PLACE

Psalm 91

INTRODUCTION

We have probably seen some ad on T. V. about “getting away from it all.” For some it is some smelly soap and a bubble bath. For some it is a vehicle (elegant, sporty, four-wheeler) to take us away from it all. For some it is a vacation. There is an entire travel channel devoted to this theme. These ads touch upon an important fact of our lives: we need help. Some would simply say we need a break, but how many come back from a break just as exhausted? And the problems still are there to face us.

Psalm 91 is one of the Psalms that multitudes have turned to in times of sickness, loneliness and trouble. This Psalm is a great “get-a-way” to God passage. When we properly get-a-way to God then the problems we have left don’t go away but they become manageable.

THEME: WHY DO WE NEED A SECRET PLACE?

I. WE NEED A SECRET PLACE BECAUSE WE NEED PROTECTION vs. 1-8

     A. The Dwelling Place     vs. 1

          3. To dwell means to settle down

          4. The wicked will not be settle down – They that hate thee shall be clothed with shame; and the dwelling place of the wicked shall come to nought.    Job 8:22

NOTE: The blessings here promised are not for all believers, but for those who live in close fellowship with God. Every child of God looks towards the inner sanctuary and the mercy seat, yet all do not dwell in the most holy place; they run to it at times, and enjoy occasional approaches, but they do not habitually reside in the mysterious presence.       Spurgeon

As he was packing he overheard a servant say, “I suppose by my Lord’s quitting London to avoid the plague that His God lives in the country and not in town.” He was so moved that he canceled his journey and stayed in London helping plague victims. He never got sick.

     D. The Protection vs. 4-8

          1. Under His wings     vs. 4a
